We wanted to find
some birds but we didn't find any.

We looked for pine cones to make bird feeders.

A great trip!

We had a fantastic (if chilly!) trip to Jamestown this weekend. We climbed aboard a replica of the Susan Constance, the ship that crossed the Atlantic to reach Jamestown.

We tried our hand at being resourceful in a Powhatan home - making fire, grinding sunflower seeds, and removing fiber from a yucca leaf.

We learned about how Powhatan Indians made fire to cook and keep warm.

And how they used fire to hollow out large trees for canoes!

We got to try scraping the fur from a deer hide.

And were greeted by musketeers at the gates to the Jamestown fort!

(Oh...and after a long hiatus...we are thrilled to have our rugs and pillows back in our classroom!!)

Intro to Invertebrates

A note from Ms. Young:

Today the kids tried their hands at classifying invertebrates into specific categories.

Here are some snippets of conversation that I eavesdropped as kids worked in groups to categorize their animals.

"I think earthworms are annelids!"

"Is a sponge a porifera?"

"Well, a flatworm is a parasite, and planarian is a parasite, so they must be the same."

"A starfish must be an echinoderm because it's kinda spiky."

"You called a sea urchin cute???"

"Squids and octopus are definitely both mollusks."

Wow! It's always a pleasure to listen in on Peabody kids :)

Learning a new math skill

This is a rek-n-rek. We used it today in math. Ms. Young moved some beads to the other side and showed it to us for one or two seconds. Then she hid it. Then we had to tell how many beads there were by remembering. It used addition and multiplication. People had different ways to figure it out.

The End to a Great First Week!

It was fun doing logic puzzles. -Aaron

This week we let the rats out twice!  -Sasha

Today was good. We did logic puzzles. - James

From Ms. Young:
Well, as you can tell, logic puzzles were a big hit! These paper-and-pencil problems teach students how to use a few clues and a grid to logically figure out a complex problem. The kids picked up on them so quickly! And what a great first week we had in 3Y! We wrote our class behavior contract after answering questions such as "how do I want to be treated by my classmates and Ms. Young", we discussed the characteristics of a good classroom learner (someone who is open-minded, a thinker, reflective, caring, and principled) and read some great picture books with characters who displayed each of those traits. We also perfected our classroom procedures, designed our own book marks, and would you believe that 3Y kids have already added 8 books to our list of completed novels? Not bad for our first 5 days together!
